"Ami Go Home"

(a single release, Oct. 15, 2004,
from a cd of original songs to be
released in Spring 2005)

In summer 2003, I sat in a cafe on Heinrich Platz in Berlin with Ulysses, who played bass for me the week prior. He regaled me with tales of life before the Wall came down and of the cultural revolution that began in Heinrich Platz in 1968. On the side of a building nearby I noticed a banner that read "Ami Go Home". Ulysses explained a little apologetically that this expression in Germany referred to Americans but that he was sure I was exempt.

Before leaving Europe that summer, I sat in a cafe in Zurich and wrote a spoken word/rap called "Ami Go Home". It speaks to the anger and frustration at American arrogance and military adventure in the world.

I'm an American but the rap comes from the point of view of Europe. I feel that I can speak from this place because I now understand that my very distant past lies in the rivers, mountains, and caves of Europe. It is my indigenous past that is speaking.

The lyrics for "Ami Go Home" are below:

Yo,
I said Yo,
I said Yo,
Ami,
Listen up,
I said Yo,
We don't want Burger King
We don't want Mickey D.,
We don't want Freedom Fries,
We don't want Franken Food,
Go Home,
Ami Go Home,.
We don't want cruise missles,
We don't want cluster bombs,
We don't want F-16s,
We don't want your army base,
Go Home,
Ami Go Home,
Said Yo, Yo, Yo, Yo,
Said Yo, Yo, Yo, Yo,
Said Yo, Yo, Yo, Yo,
Said Go, Go, Go, Go,
Go Home,
Ami Go Home,
We don't want preemption,
We don't want regime change,
We don't want occupation,
We don't want interrogation,
We don't want blood money,
We don't want deck of cards,
We don't want permanent war,
We don't want your American way,
Go Home,
Ami Go Home,
Get that shit outa here,
Nobody wants to eat it man,
Not the people in the streets,
Not the people who are starvin',
Not the billions in the world,
Who said you could rule the world,
Go Home,
We said Go,
Damn.
Yo Ami, Ami, Ami,
Look man, listen up,
It don't have to be like this,
It don't have to be this way,
Do you understand,
You want to come,
Walk with us,
Walk with us,
In the fields,
Grow organic not Franken Food,
So you can own the patent,
You want to help,
No strings attached,
You want to help,
No throwin' weight around,
You want to come,
Walk in peace,
And bring no ultimatums,
And bring no weapons systems,
And bring no final warnings,
You hear an echo, in the hills,
You hear an echo, in the caves,
You hear an echo, in the moorlands,
in the stones,

You want to come,
Walk the path,
Walk the path,
To the past,
That'll be cool, we'll do that,

But you got to leave,
You got to leave,
You got to leave,
That other shit behind.

You got to leave,
You got to leave,
You got to leave,
That other shit behind,

Then come home,
Then come home,
Then come home,
Yeh, Ami,
Then come home,

Be cool man,
Yo.
